The Strain gage method, Holographic method and Photoelastic analysis etc. have been
used for stress analysis of prosthesis, orthodontic or orthopedic appliances and filling
materials. But these methods shows limits on the analysis of internal stress. But the
Finite Element Analysis makes it.
The purpose of this study was to compare the stress distribution of the various
amalgam cavity design. The cavity was designed to 4 different types according to width
and depth ; isthmus ¨÷, more than ¨ö and flatten pulpal floor, rounded pulpal floor for
protection of pulpal damage.
The results were as follows :
1. Model I shows no critical stress on tooth material and the degree of forces are mild.
2. When the isthmus is ¨ö of cuspal width, the stresses are distribute in cavity,
cervical area and cusp tips. The degree of stress was higher when the isthmus is ¨÷ of
cuspal width.
3. When the pulpal floor is rounded, the stress was distributed well than that of the
flattened palpal floor. The latter shows that the stresses were widely distribute of into
the tooth material than when the rounded pulpal floor.
4. Flattened pulpal floor shows that the stresses are higher than rounded pulpal floor
on cusp tips and cervical area.
